Belen Maya Flamenco The hot-blooded Flamenco may not seem like something you would find at a festival of World Sacred Music. In fact, it is an art form expressed through both song and dance that comes straight from the deepest recesses of the human heart. The plaintive cries of the singer need no interpretation. The raw emotion in the voice says it all. Originally brought to Spain by the Gypsies, Flamenco dance requires a
fascinating precision of movement and intense concentration. As one
watches the dancer move in concert with the singer, an almost
trance-like atmosphere takes over.
All eyes were on Belen Maya as she interpreted Flamenco in four
different dances. Jose Luis Rodriguez provided beautiful accompaniment
on the classical guitar. Three singers also provided some back-up
percussion to draw the audience in with hand-clapping and oles.
The audience loved this evening interlude in Spain and demanded an encore performance.
